Dr. Syarawi Sharoni is a senior lecturer in the Geophysics Department at the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Geophysics from Universiti Sains Malaysia, a Master of Research in Ocean Science from the University of Southampton, UK, and a PhD in Remote Sensing from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. After graduating with his Bachelor's degree, he worked as an imaging geophysicist at Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) before pursuing his Master’s degree.
With extensive expertise in oceanography and microwave remote sensing, Dr. Syarawi focuses on understanding Earth's most extreme natural phenomena, such as tropical cyclones, extreme rainfall, heatwaves, and regional climate variations—including the Indian Ocean Dipole, monsoon systems, Madden-Julian Oscillation, and El Niño/La Niña events—and their effects on the South China Sea region's climate, primarily through satellite-based platforms. He is proficient in MATLAB programming and machine learning techniques, applying these skills to process large datasets and develop innovative methodologies. His research aims to deepen the understanding of the dynamic interplay between the oceans and atmosphere, contributing to advancements in Earth and climate science.
" Dr. Syarawi Sharoni ialah pensyarah kanan di Kumpulan Geofizik, Pusat Pengajian Sains Fizik, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Beliau memiliki Ijazah Sarjana Muda dalam bidang Geofizik dari Universiti Sains Malaysia, Ijazah Sarjana Penyelidikan dalam Sains Lautan dari University of Southampton, UK, dan Ijazah Doktor Falsafah dalam Penderiaan Jauh dari Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Selepas menamatkan Ijazah Sarjana Muda, beliau bekerja sebagai geofizik pengimejan di Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) sebelum melanjutkan pengajian ke peringkat Sarjana.
Dengan kepakaran luas dalam oseanografi dan penderiaan jauh gelombang mikro, Dr. Syarawi memberi tumpuan kepada pemahaman tentang fenomena alam semula jadi yang ekstrem di Bumi seperti taufan tropika, hujan lebat, gelombang haba, serta variasi iklim serantau—termasuk Dwi Kutub Lautan Hindi, sistem monsun, Osilasi Madden-Julian, dan peristiwa El Niño/La Niña—dan kesannya terhadap iklim di kawasan Laut China Selatan, terutamanya melalui penggunaan platform satelit. Beliau mahir dalam pengaturcaraan MATLAB dan teknik pembelajaran mesin, dan menggunakan kemahiran ini untuk memproses set data besar dan membangunkan metodologi inovatif. Penyelidikannya bertujuan untuk memperdalam pemahaman tentang interaksi dinamik antara lautan dan atmosfera, menyumbang kepada kemajuan dalam sains bumi dan iklim. "
